Championship Best Bets: Tuesday, October 4th

We’ve got Championship best bets this midweek. As Sunday signalled the end of one game week, so Tuesday heralds the beginning of another. It is of course the mad world of the English Championship. My three best bets all involve teams with eyes on the play-off places.

Bristol City vs Coventry Preview

England, Championship, Tuesday, October 4th, 19:45 (UK)

Following putting together a run of eight games unbeaten in all competitions things have turned sour for Bristol City. A run of three successive league defeats has seen the Robins slip down to 12th in the table. The 2-1 reverse to QPR at Ashton Gate on Saturday continued their record of scoring in every Championship game this season.

Nigel Pearson assessed that his side “contributed heavily to the defeat”. There is now a four-point gap to the play-offs. If he wishes to bridge that, Pearson knows he must improve a defence which currently has only one more porous than it in the second tier.

Coventry secured their first win of the season at the weekend. Viktor Gyökeres’ first-half winner piled more misery on Middlesbrough and lengthened their own unbeaten run to three games.

Although remaining rooted to the foot of the table that position continues to be a slightly false one. The Sky Blues have three games in hand on most of the division. The weekend outing was only their second at home. They will be grateful for more games at Coventry Building Society Arena given Mark Robins has seen his side fail to win any of their last eight road trips. These two sides have already met this term. Bristol City triumphed 4-1 in the Carabao Cup back in August.

Bristol City vs Coventry Best Bet

With Coventry’s struggles away from home I expect Bristol City to get back to winning ways here. One player who has continued his fine form through his side’s recent wobbles is Nahki Wells. The Bermudan international has been on the scoresheet in four of the last five games. Scoring five goals across those fixtures. He is just one goal behind Oscar Estupinan as the league’s top marksman and I am taking him to threaten that position by adding to his tally here.

  • Selection: Nahki Wells to score (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 3.00 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 6/10

Luton vs Huddersfield Preview

England, Championship, Tuesday, October 4th, 19:45 (UK)

These two sides contested one of last season’s play-off semi-finals. Since then, their fortunes have taken very different routes. In mid-May, Huddersfield defeated Luton 1-0 to secure their place in the Championship play-off final. Of course, the Terriers then went on to lose to Nottingham Forest in the showpiece event. With that dream also went manager Carlos Corberán and key players Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffolo.

Corberán’s replacement, Danny Schofield, has already departed with Mark Fotheringham taking his first game at the weekend. Hopes of an immediate “new manager bounce” evaporated with a 3-1 humbling at Reading. It should be clear to him now that the task ahead is improving his new side’s current spot in the relegation zone.

Luton in contrast will be hunting down a third successive league victory. The Hatters’ 2-0 success at Hull on Friday evening was their fourth in their last seven fixtures. Although a fortuitous own goal set them on their way, Henri Lansbury’s thunderous strike in off the post was worthy of settling any game.

Luton vs Huddersfield Best Bet

Despite their fine run of form, Nathan Jones’s side has only won one of six home games this season. That was however in their last outing at Kenilworth Road when they overcame Blackburn 2-0. They could hardly pick a better opponent to continue the improvement of that record.

Huddersfield have lost all four league road trips so far this term. Conceding at least two goals in all of those fixtures. Contributing to a record of just one clean sheet all campaign. I can’t see Fotheringham having had the time to turn things around enough to prevent the home side picking up another three points here.

  • Selection: Luton to win
  • Best Odds: 1.85 (Coral)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Sunderland vs Blackpool Preview

England, Championship, Tuesday, October 4th, 19:45 (UK)

On Saturday Sunderland became the latest of six sides this season to register a goalless stalemate with Preston. Tony Mowbray brushed it off as “not being a problem” and the league table backs that sentiment up. The Black Cats are just outside the play-offs having accumulated 16 points from their opening 11 games. Surely testament to the seamless transition from Alex Neil following the Scots departure at the end of August. Also contending with the loss of talismanic top scorer Ross Stewart and fellow striker Ellis Simms.

Their weekend defeat to Norwich was Blackpool’s third in succession. As a result, the Seasiders sit just one point above the relegation zone. The 1-0 scoreline kept Michael Appleton’s men in the game until the final whistle. However, the Canaries hit the woodwork twice and rained in 22 attempts at Chris Maxwell’s goal. The keeper was forced into seven saves to keep the visitors at bay.

Sunderland vs Blackpool Best Bet

The temptation was strong to play the Sunderland win here. Even though they have the quality to claim all three points, I prefer another angle of attack to get the Black Cats onside. The Tangerines’ 3-3 draw at Burnley and victory at QPR suggest they can be competitive visitors. Instead, I am taking the home side to score over 1.5 goals.

As Mowbray pointed out after the Preston draw his side have scored five in the prior two games. I also saw at the weekend the regularity Blackpool’s defence was cut through as well as several unforced errors. They have also shipped five goals in their last two road trips to Millwall and Rotherham. I am confident this vibrant Sunderland attack will cause the visitors at least an equal amount of problems.

  • Selection: Sunderland over 1.5 goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.00 (Paddy Power)
  • Stakes: 6/10

Best odds available as at 00:00 October 3rd 2022. Odds may now differ.
