France, Ligue 1, Friday, August 19th, 20:00 (UK)
Newly-promoted Toulouse downed Troyes to the tune of 0-3 in front of home support last week. It’s a scoreline that suggests Troyes may be bang in trouble this season, following Montpellier’s opening 3-2 defeat.
Whilst Troyes, the Ligue 1 outfit part of the City Group, were being taught a lesson on their own patch, Peter Bosz’s Lyon had their feet up all weekend. A waterlogged pitch at the Stade du Moustoir was enough to curtail Lorient’s less than warm welcome. The AC Ajaccio opening day 2-1 win for Lyon made it five wins from six in Ligue 1. It’s a period where they’ve scored plenty of goals but have often appeared leaky defensively.
In the six outings mentioned above, 4/6 have seen Lyon score in both halves. Two strikes came in the first half against AC Ajaccio before a red card saw chances at a premium despite still commanding much more possession. In the other fixture, Lyon scored all three goals in the second half in Marseille in a 0-3 victory. Over a larger sample size last season, Lyon registered a goal in both halves in 6/19 home matches. Troyes, on the other hand, conceded a goal in both halves in 4/19 away from home.
England, League One, Saturday, August 20th, 15:00 (UK)
The Grecians are League One quality; that’s evident. St James’ Park will be a tough place to visit for their third-tier counterparts this year, as both Port Vale and Wycombe have found out to their detriment – and to impressive scorelines.
Cheltenham are next to visit the South West. After their 0-7 humiliation from Exeter in the Cup, don’t be surprised if the hosts harness superiority again and plunder two goals.

Burton are without a win all season, so this may appear as a peculiar pick. However, the performance against Ipswich deserved much more than a 0-1 loss. On another day, the Brewers get the rub of the green and end up with a big victory for the club. Burton took a 0-3 lead against Accrington away from home in the match before. A late capitulation was to thank for a 4-4 draw, though there were promising signs to take into the Ipswich game, which they did.
Now, Port Vale presents the next task. Vale won on the opening day before losing 4-0 to an Exeter side successfully adjusting to League One. In addition, an inability to get on the scoresheet after a Bolton 37th-minute red card reared its head in the following fixture, whilst MK Dons proved too strong midweek.
Saturday will be a battle for both sides, but the 0.0 Asian handicap for the home team seems a little large for me.
England, Championship, Saturday, August 20th, 15:00 (UK)
Expecting another full-blooded affair in the Championship as the Blades welcome a Blackburn side that was in full flow before a stuttering stopover in Reading. With Leigh Doughty in charge, the man with the whistle who has delivered 10 yellow cards and one red in two matches, we could be in safe hands. Doughty has handed out eight yellows and one red card in the second half of his two 2022/23 matches. More of the same and this selection will be sitting pretty.
Although Doughty has started this season with a no-nonsense approach, his figures last season suggest that the opening two outings will likely not be sustainable. From 24 matches last season, the official averaged 3.96 yellows per90, with 2.67 coming in the second 45 minutes.

England, Premier League, Sunday, August 20th, 14:00 (UK)
A fired-up Thomas Tuchel will rightfully feel aggrieved for not taking all three points home with them against Spurs last time out. It was 90 minutes that had it all, though an encounter in which Chelsea had the edge.
Leeds continue to entertain. The 2-1 Wolves win, and the 2-2 draw with Southampton are just two reminders that Leeds United fixtures are often full of drama and goals. With the expectation that Chelsea arrive too strong, but goals continue to be a theme at Elland Road, the 1.80 offers a handy angle into the match on Sunday.
England, Premier League, Monday, August 22nd, 20:00 (UK)
Manchester United picked up where they left off last season, albeit with a new management team at the helm. The Brentford showing on Saturday highlighted the deficiencies in United’s game, ensuring United occupy last place as they head into the Monday Night Football slot.
If Erik ten Haag’s side approaches the Liverpool match similarly, it could be a cricket score. Inept at playing out from the back and unable to live with Brentford on the counter, propped up by a goalkeeper who struggled to catch a cold in the first 45 minutes in the capital. Liverpool’s press, plus their ability to turn over possession and work the ball up the pitch with pace, will presumably frighten the life out of this United side. The Old Trafford lodgers have deserved to lose against both Brighton and Brentford so far, and one fears for their fate on Monday.
United have received five yellow cards in the second half of their opening two matches this season. It’s a nod towards the sense of frustration of being behind and an urge to somehow imprint themselves on the game. If the 90 minutes pans out to a Liverpool victory, a card or two in the second half is conceivable.
Michael Oliver takes the whistle here. Although not the loosest with his bookings, he ended 2021/22 with a 2.31 second-half card average from 26 Premier League matches.

Acca Odds: 44.10
Odds via bet365 as at 10:00 August 18th 2022. Odds may now differ.
A football acca is an accumulator bet, a type of bet that consists of several selections across different matches that are combined together into one single bet. An acca usually. consists of at least four selections but many more can be included. There will be odds for the single bet as a whole which is calculated by multiplying the odds of all of the selections. A football acca is one of the most popular ways to bet. This is the case because they can create potentially massive odds for a small stake. Many punters choose to create football accas which is what we have created here. If one of these selections loses then the football acca will lose. This type of bet needs every selection to win in order to succeed.
