Scott Thornton brings you bus West Ham vs Freiburg prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview
West Ham were held to a 2-2 draw by Burnley in the Premier League at the weekend but they comes into this match needing a win to keep their Europa League dreams alive. Freiburg managed a 2-1 win over Bochum in their last match. Our West Ham vs Freiburg prediction is for West Ham to win the match 2-0.
Europe, Europa League, Thursday, March 14th, 17:45( (UK)
West Ham will have been disappointed with their performance in the first leg but there is still plenty of time for them to turn the tide. The Hammers fancied their chances going into the game and while it was an evenly-contested affair, taking a goal deficit into the home leg gives them a fair bit to do. However, they should make amends here so we are backing them to win on the 1×2 market.
David Moyes’ side lifted the Europa Conference League last season and would love to go one better by winning the Europa League this time around. Their home form was a crucial part of last season’s European success and it should be a decisive factor here. West Ham have won all 10 of their matches at the London Stadium in continental competitions since the start of last season.
Freiburg’s away form leaves a lot to be desired. They are without a win in their last six matches on the road. Moreover, they are averaging just 1.06 goals per away game this season.
The next bet for this Europa League encounter is for West Ham to score at least two goals in the match. As previously mentioned, the Hammers have an exceptional home record in European competition. They have scored an average of 2.5 goals in those matches since the start of last season. They have scored at least two goals in eight of those ten games and even managed a 2-0 win at home to Freiburg in the group stages this season.
West Ham laid siege to the Burnley goal at the weekend, racking up a total of 22 shots as they drew 2-2. Dropping points will have disappointed Moyes as the team looks to qualify for Europe once again. The game showed the attacking threat they can pose and we should also expect a response after the setback. The Hammers have now scored at least two goals in their last three Premier League matches.
Freiburg are conceding an average of 1.76 goals per away game this season and the home side knows they need at least two goals to avoid extra time. Christian Streich’s side have conceded two or more goals in five of their last six away matches.
Lastly, we are backing West Ham to win at least six corners as they look to overcome a first-leg setback. They are averaging 5.15 corners per game in European completion since the start of last season. This climbs to six per game in their Europa League and Europe Conference League matches at the London Stadium.
David Moyes’ side won four corners in the first leg in Germany. Expect that number to increase with the Hammers finding themselves a goal behind from the get-go.
Freiburg have been poor in the road this season and are soaking up a lot of pressure as a result. This leads to increased corner numbers for their opponents. Stretch’s side are conceding an average of 6.28 corners across their 18 away matches in all conceptions. They have conceded 12 and 10 corners in their last two away games.
