We bring you our Wolfsburg vs Augsburg prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview courtesy of Scott Thornton.
Wolfsburg have dropped down the Bundesliga table but there is very little danger of them entering the relegation scrap. Augsburg have one eye on the European places but it would take an incredible run of form to close the gap on the teams above them. Jess Thorup’s are unbeaten in their last four matches against Wolfsburg. Our Wolfsburg vs Augsburg prediction is for Augsburg to win the match 2-1.
Germany, Bundesliga, Saturday, March 16th, 14:30 (UK)
Wolfsburg have struggled since the Bundesliga restarted after the winter break. They are without a win in nine matches. The defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in their last match made it back-to-back defeats.
Despite the poor run of results, Wolfsburg have managed to score in all four of their home matches since the turn of the year. I’m backing goals in this one. We can get odds of 2.05 for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals in the match. Niko Kovac’s side’s matches in 2024 have seen an average of 2.67 goals. Moreover, both teams have scored in seven of Wolfsburg’s last nine matches. They failed to score against the league leaders last weekend. The only other match they have drawn a blank in was when they faced Union Berlin away from home.
Augsburg away matches this season have seen 3.08 goals on average. They beat Wolfsburg 3-2 when the teams went head-to-head earlier this season. The game finished 2-2 the last time they played at this ground.
Neither of these teams can boast a good run of form coming into this one. However, backing the visitors as the outsiders at odds of 3.50 makes more sense.
Wolfsburg have been poor at the Volkswagen Arena. They won their first three league games of the campaign in front of their own fans but have just one win in the nine home matches since. They are conceding an average of 1.67 goals per game over that period. That’s 0.34 more goals than they have scored. Kovac’s men were beaten by Stuttgart in their last home match and currently sit seven points behind Augsburg in the table.
Augsburg beat Darmstadt 6-0 on the road in their last match. Darmstadt are dead last in the Bundesliga but the emphatic scoreline will have provided a confidence boost. Jess Thorup’s side showed great character to come from behind and beat Wolfsburg earlier in the season so the odds on an Augsburg win look a little generous.
Ermedin Demirovic has been the standout performer for Ausburg this season and he should thrive in a game that looks destined for goals. He has six goals in his last seven Bundesliga matches. This good run has taken his league tally to 14 in 25 appearances. Demirovic has twice as many goals as Phillip Tietz, Augsburg’s second-highest scorer. Ermedin started out wide when the teams met earlier in the season but he has been thriving in a strike partnership of late.
Demirovic is the club captain and leads by example. He is comfortable all across the front line and loves to play on the shoulder of the opposition defence. However, he isn’t just a goal-getter. The attacker loves creating chances for his teammates. He has a total of eight assists in the Bundesliga this season, meaning he has directly contributed to just under 60% of Augsburg’s goals.
The Bosnian’s non-penalty xG of 0.32 per 90 minutes played puts him in the 84th percentile when compared with all other forwards across Europe’s top five leagues.
Wolfsburg vs Augsburg Prediction odds via bet365 as at 09:00, March 11th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
There are no new injury concerns for Wolfsburg. Ulysses Llanez has missed the whole season after being involved in a traffic accident but he is their only player unavailable due to his fitness. Moritz Jenz was sent off in the defeat against Bayer Leverkusen so he cannot feature.
Augsburg’s defensive options are depleted by injury. Former West Ham defender, Reece Oxford, has been out for several months and there are no signs that his return is imminent. His fellow centre-back, Patric Pfeiffer is also unavailable. Raphael Framberger has also been out for a lengthy period.
Wolfsburg possible starting lineup: Casteels; Maehle. Zesiger, Lacroix, Baku; Gerhardt, Arnold, Majer, Cerny, Paredes;Behrens
Augsburg possible starting lineup: Dahmen; Iago, Udokhai, Gouweleeuw, Mbabu; Maier, Jakic, Jensen, Vargas; Tietz, Demirovic
