Borussia Dortmund responded well after their draw in Heidenheim. Edin Terzic was critical of his players after the result, but die Schwarzgelben, they remedied their creative problems as they trounced Freiburg 3-0. They have now picked up 13 points in five matches since the winter break, working their way back into the league’s top four. We’re backing Dortmund to come out on top once again. Terzic will have been delighted with the way his team penned Freiburg back, and they could carry that momentum in this clash.
Donyell Malen and Nicals Fullkrug were lethal in the attack last weekend. Dortmund have been good going forward in the majority of their matches, including those on the road. They are averaging 2.1 goals per away game, losing just one of those in the process.
Wolfsburg have a miserable record against Borussia Dortmund. They have won just one of the last 17 head-to-heads between the sides and have lost 15. The solitary win came in this fixture last season.
Niko Kovac’s side were bitterly disappointing as they succumbed to defeat against Union Berlin last weekend. Wolfsburg’s defeat dragged them closer to the drop zone, so the pressure is mounting on the manager. The gap to Koln, who occupy the relegation playoff place, is now just seven points.
Wolfsburg needs to respond here and put an end to their run of six Bundesliga matches without a win. Despite their difficulties, they have managed to pose an attacking threat. The 1-0 loss against Union Berlin was the first time they had failed to score in six matches. They have scored in eight of their nine home matches in the league this season. Those games have seen an average of 2.78 goals overall. We’re banking on that goal trend continuing by picking both teams to score over 2.5 goals in the match. This bet has won in seven of die Wolfe’s home matches in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund’s matches on the road have seen even more goals, with an average of 3.2 per game.
Edin Terzic opted to play Fullkrug and Malen as a strike partnership in their last game. There is no reason for him to switch things up here, with both players proving to be a handful for the opposition defence.
Fullkrug excels at creating chances for his teammates. He is averaging 0.31 assists per 90 minutes this season, which puts him in the 99th percentile when compared with all other forwards in Europe’s top five leagues. Niclas also ranks highly in terms of progressive passes, with an average of 2.76 per game. Donyell Malen benefits from having a creative hub in the forward line with him.
Malen found the net twice in the win over Freiburg. The Dutch attacker has had to work hard for his starting berth but has thrived when on the pitch this season.
He has a non-penalty xG of 0.63 per 90 minutes, which ranks in the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across the top leagues in the continent. The fact he has featured as a striker is a contributing factor, but it highlights his willingness to have a go in advanced areas.
Wolfsburg vs Dortmund Prediction odds via bet365 as at 06:00, February 12th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Wolfsburg are likely to be without Tiago Tomas, who has an elbow injury. There are three lengthy absentees in the form of Lukes Mnecha, Patrick Wimmer and Ulysses Llanez. The latter has been out since the summer after an injury he sustained in a car accident.
Edin Terzi almost has a full squad available to him, with several players returning to full fitness. Sebastien Haller is also likely to be with the squad after lifting the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast. Haller scored the crucial goal in the final to continue his fairytale story since beating cancer.
Wolfsburg possible starting lineup:
Pervan; Rogier, Jenz, Lacroix, Maehle; Paredes, Arnold, Svanberg, Majer; Wind, Behrens
Borussia Dortmund possible starting lineup:
Kobel; Maatsen, Sule, Schlotterback, Ryerson; Sabitzer, Can, Sancho, Brandt; Fullkrug, Malen
