WTA Eastbourne BEST BET: HADDAD MAIA VS KVITOVA
Friday, June 24th, 11:00 UK Time
The first match of the day in the ATP and WTA combined event in the southern city of Eastbourne will be an all-southpaw affair between Beatriz Haddad Maia and Petra Kvitova.
With both women possessing impressive power behind their serves and strong forehand wings, this one could feature some blistering rallies.
With form and rally tolerance favouring the Brazilian and previous grass-court pedigree and comfort on surface favouring the Czech, this one has all the potential to be relatively close.
With Kvitova still needing matches to build some form ahead of Wimbledon, and Haddad Maia not likely to bow out despite all the tennis she’s played of late, thanks to a first-round by, a quick match against Jodie Anna Burrage and then receiving a walkover in the quarterfinal from Lesia Tsurenko, we shouldn’t see any of the motivational issues that can plague total games over bets the weeks prior to grand slams.
We also see the statistical numbers we’d want in this one. It’s far less common on the women’s tour to find players – regardless of surface – that are capable of holding serve over 80% of the time, winning over 70% of their first-serve points and backing up their second serves at a rate of over 50%. In this matchup, both women have managed to post those kinds of numbers on grass over the span of the last 52 weeks.
While Haddad Maia’s blistering form and abilities on return may have concerned me a bit, the fact that Kvitova has managed to hold her serve in 30 of 34 service games (88%) this week is reassuring enough to take a position on the over games market here.
With a strong possibility that this match goes three sets or has at least a tiebreak sprinkled into a straight-set affair, 22 games is well worth a play in this spot.
