Tough two days with the women’s selections as Tereza Martincova implodes from a 6-2, *3-1 40-15 dominant lead (more on that later) and then Nuria Parrizas Diaz blew a break lead in the first and was twice just a pair of points away from winning the second set.
For Wednesday’s WTA selection, we take a look at the match between Oksana Selekhmeteva and Chloe Paquet on the hard courts of Prague.
In this article:

Opposing players who barely made it through to the second rounds of their respective tournaments is a running theme for our selections for Wednesday’s action (see the men’s article covering a match in Kitzbuhel).
In this case, it’s Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet, who was being absolutely dominated by Martincova through a set and a half, before the Prague native lost control of her forehand (ending the match with 54 unforced errors after playing a very clean first set and a half).
As we outlined in Monday’s match breakdown, Paquet doesn’t have very much to offer at the WTA Tour level outside of her first serve. The second serve isn’t particularly strong and she doesn’t do a great job locating it. Her first forehand can be attack-minded, but once into a longer rally, she struggles to really dictate points. To top it all off, she’s a poor mover and often a step behind, and unable to do anything but return balls into the service box.
The 19-year-old Russian is well-positioned to deal with her game, yet for different reasons than Martincova. While the Czech was more attack-oriented and looking for winners, Selekhmeteva is a wall from the baseline and instead uses angles on her groundstrokes to open space and the ability to go down the line off both her forehand and backhand wings to hit through said space.
With Paquet more than happy to wait out the unforced errors that Martincova was all-too-happy to concede being her primary strategy last time around, she’ll be in tough against someone who is far more consistent, yet can still pick on one of her weaknesses ( lack of mobility).
As frustrating as it was watching Monday’s bet lose from being under 10 points from victory, the fact is Paquet was in trouble and did demonstrate the weaknesses we had expected.
As a result, I’m more than willing to block that tough result from memory and proceed with this position as it is just as worthwhile – if not more so – than our last!
