The San Francisco 49ers are three-point favourites on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night. After blowing out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, the Niners have won six in a row to move to a 9-4 record. Seattle’s early season surge has waned of late, with three losses in four weeks. They are still 7-6 on the season, however, and in a very strong position for a postseason berth.

Seattle has gone 5-3 against the spread as an underdog in the 2022 regular season. San Francisco, meanwhile, are 8-5 ATS for the season, a mark which is only bettered by the Bengals, Giants and Lions. They are, however, 1-3 ATS as a road favourite, while the Seahawks have covered in both games as a home underdog.

San Francisco won by a scoreline of 27-7 when these teams met in Week 2. A lot has changed for the Niners since then, with Brock Purdy starting under centre last week, and Christian McCaffrey being acquired ahead of the trade deadline. While the offence has been great (eighth in points scored per game), it is the defence which makes the 49ers a real contender. No team concedes fewer points per game.

Seattle, in contrast, are 30th in points allowed. Geno Smith has marshalled an effective offence too, though, with Pete Carroll’s team placing sixth in scoring. They have scored fewer than 24 points just once since Week 6.

It is against the run where the Seahawks really struggle. Only the Texans allow more ground yards per game. There are only four teams who concede more yards per rush. San Francisco is 10th in rushing play rate. The line for Niners rushing yards is 148.5, a number they have passed in three straight, and the Seahawks have allowed more than that in four consecutive games.

San Francisco is the best rushing defence in the NFL. Seattle is in the bottom 10 in rushing frequency, and the game script could dictate they put the onus on Geno Smith. Smith’s pass attempts line is set at 34.5, which is higher than his season average of 32.9. He has, however, passed this number in each of his last three.

The Niners have held teams to under 10 points on four occasions this season, including their win over the Seahawks. That is the only time Seattle have scored fewer than 17. With how their offence has performed throughout this season and a sizeable homefield advantage, we can feel confident about the Seahawks scoring 10 or more, and the same goes for this Niners offence against a porous defence.

This should be an entertaining Thursday night showpiece in the Pacific northwest. It will be a challenge for the Niners, but we can’t bet against them with how they have played over the last couple of months.
