Sunday is a big day in Italy: aside from the top of the table clash, Inter vs Juventus, there’s also a massive game in Bergamo, so we prepared this Atalanta vs Lazio prediction, tips and best bets preview for you to feast on.
The Bergamaschi are fourth in Serie A only two points ahead of the visitors. Will this be a goal fest like the reverse fixture that ended 3-2 for Maurizio Sarri’s team? Our Italian football expert Daniele Fisichella has got the answer.
In this article:
Italy, Serie A, Sunday, February 4th, 17:00 (UK)
The hosts are, without a doubt, Italy’s most in-form team. They’ve only lost one of their last eight games (1-0 to Bologna) and have equalled their best domestic points tally (25 after eleven games) since 1996/1997.
Back then, they had a young Fillpo ‘Pippo’ Inzaghi banging the goals (he eventually won the capocannoniere (top goalscorer) title with 25 goals before being sold to Juventus in the summer), and this season they’ve rediscovered a player that many considered lost.
Charles De Keteleare has scored seven times and provided seven assists so far.
The Belgian looks like a new man compared to the timid and bewildered figure that barely left a mark last season at AC Milan.
Since December, only Kylian Mbappe has had more goals contributions (15) than De Keteleare (10, five goals and five assists) in Europe’s top five leagues.
In the summer, Atalanta secured a €23 million buyout clause from the Rossoneri, and it looks like they’ve landed a bargain.
CDK has inspired Giampiero Gasperini’s side to win six consecutive home matches, but lately, all of Atalanta’s front line has been firing from all cylinders, with Miranchuk and Scamacca also finding the net on various occasions.
The hosts look like they’ve found the right balance and have not been missing their top goalscorer, Ademola Lookman, who’s playing at the AFCON.
Atalanta often dominates at home, where they’ve only failed to score once this season (0-0 vs Juventus) and have kept nine clean sheets in all competitions. The Bergamaschi have got the second-best domestic attack (24 goals scored, only one less than Inter) and have scored nine times at home in the first 45 minutes.
Lazio come to this match on the back of five positive results in Serie A (four wins and Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Napoli) and after a bad start of the season (only five wins in their first 13 games), last year’s Serie A runners-up have started climbing up the table.
Maurizio Sarri’s side’s turn of fortunes has been built on defensive solidity but to the detriment of entertainment.
Crucially, it has also coincided with the Champions League’s group stages coming to an end.
Lazio currently has the fourth-best defence in Serie A (20 goals conceded, same as Bologna) and has kept nine clean sheets in the last 14 games in all competitions.
Since their pivotal 1-0 win against Feyenoord (7 November), they decided to ditch the high press and the long spells of ball possession in favour of quicker counterattacks.
With the addition of Rovella, Lazio’s midfield has found a better balance, and the team is more able to support the presence of Luis Alberto behind the front three.
Lazio now look suited to manage games, and in particular the tight margins, but score very little (they’ve got Serie A’s 12th attack, having netted just one more goal than Udinese), produce very few shots (they’re penultimate, ahead of Genoa and Torino, with 236 attempts) and attacking sequences (they’re just ninth for corners taken in Serie A).
Last Sunday, Lazio did not concede a single shot on target to Napoli but only had one real chance to open the scoring.
Atalanta vs Lazio Prediction odds via bet365 as at 11:00, January 30th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Giampiero Gasperini will probably repeat the same formation that beat Udinese 2-0 last weekend. In fact, Teun Koopmeiners is likely to miss this game due to an ankle injury, and Isak Hien, signed this month from Verona, is out at least until mid-February.
In the Lazio camp, Danilo Cataldi is suspended and will be replaced in midfield by Rovella.
The back line will be the same that played against Napoli, whereas up front, Mattia Zaccagni is ready to start in place of Gustav Isaksen.
Ciro Immboile, and Taty Castellanos are in contention to play as centre-forward. Spanish defender Patric might not be available due to injury.
