The Premier League has grown into a product so competitive that the race for survival has become as thrilling as the race for the top-flight crown. This season will likely be no different, as Luton Town, Sheffield United, and Burnley come up from the Championship planning on retaining Premier League status for 2024/25.

Before we crack on and see who fancies who for the drop, here’s a 2023/24 Premier League ante-post betting preview from one of our very own; Scott Thornton.

In this article:

Jack Wright’s Premier League Relegation Odds and Predictions: Dismal goal returns

Luton is a warm order to return straight back to the Championship following their Wembley playoff penalty shoot-out success at the end of May. However, not only are they far too short to put forward as a suggestion, I feel they have a better chance of survival than the odds suggest.

It is incredible to see a team competing in the top tier just ten years after they were plying their trade in the National League. It gives hope to all fans of EFL teams dreaming of seeing their side in the Premier League.

The Hatters will play quick, direct football, aiming to win the ball up high with their relentless energy. I hope they play to their strengths and channel their inner Brentford, who initially survived after ruffling a few well-preened feathers.

Set pieces will be key, as will a defence that performed well last year in conceding the second-fewest goals behind Burnley. Rob Edwards, who has done an incredible job at Kenilworth Road following his sacking at arch-rivals Watford, will take hope in the fact none of the promoted sides suffered relegation last term. Neither have any of the last four sides making their debut in the Premier League as Luton are this term.

Instead, I choose to look at the odds for the likes of Forest, Everton and even West Ham to give more value in this market. However, my selection is for Wolves to exit through the trapdoor.

I am typing this as fast as I can with the news Julen Lopetegui is edging closer to vacating the Molineux hot seat. The Spaniard masterminded a revival last season following his appointment in November when the Old Gold were second from bottom of the Premier League, ending the campaign in 13th with a seven-point cushion to the drop zone.

However, since then, the likes of Conor Coady, Raúl Jiménez, Nathan Collins and particularly star man Rúben Neves have all left the club. The lack of investment this summer amid financial fair play constraints is said to be the main reason for Lopetegui’s public unhappiness.

Wolves will desperately need to improve an away record that was horrific last term, even with the ex-Real Madrid boss in charge. Just two wins from 19 road trips saw only Nottingham Forest and relegated Leeds pick up fewer points away from home.

A dismal return of 31 goals was easily the lowest in the top flight. It is hard to see who currently at the club will be able to impact change on those statistics; therefore, a season of struggle looms.

Jimmy The Punt’s Premier League Relegation Odds and Predictions: Miracles in Nottingham

My beloved Sheffield United look destined to prop up the table this campaign, and I do not think that opinion has been clouded by cynicism.

Behind the scenes, financial uncertainty has crippled the Blades this summer, making them unable to make any substantial moves in the transfer market, leaving them unequipped to compete with the quality of the top flight.

On the pitch, Illiman Ndiaye, their starman from last campaign, is on the verge of joining Marseille. He had a direct hand in 25 league goals in the Championship, and without his creative spark, the S2 club looks short on options.

Who will be joining them? I am quietly confident Luton will not be. And that opens up a can of worms because the Hatters are favourites for the drop. They have been coy in the market, and I have faith in Rob Edwards.

I fancy Wolves at tasty odds. Despite a lot of noise surrounding his appointment, Julen Lopetegui could not really get a tune out of the Wanderers and grew ever more frustrated by the lack of investment.

My final fancy for the drop is Nottingham Forest. It was a miracle that Steve Cooper kept them above the dotted line last season amidst 29 new faces, and that was because they won half of their last six games. I am just not convinced by the Tricky Trees.

Matthew O’Reagan’s Premier League Relegation Odds and Predictions: Where do the goals come from?

While much of the talk of relegation surrounds perennial underdogs Luton and cash-strapped Sheffield United, I am deciding to focus on a slightly higher price (4.00) for relegation.

Wolves have had a chaotic summer, with club captain Ruben Neves departing for Saudi Arabia and Irish centre-back Nathan Collins being sold to Brentford. Julien Lopetegui has also publicly declared his frustration with the lack of funds on display.

A huge problem for Wolves last season was their lack of goals; they ended the season as the lowest scorers (31). While Saša Kalajdźic is back fit and Fabio Silva returns from his loan spell, question marks still remain over the state of the attack.

Another worry would be the end-of-season form, with Lopetegui’s side capitulating to a 5-0 defeat to Arsenal and a 6-0 defeat to Brighton in the latter stages of the campaign.

Even though I expect Luton and Sheffield United to struggle, the third favourite for the drop is Bournemouth. With the appointment of Andoni Iraola as well as some savvy signings, I have no doubt that the Cherries will be closer to the top half than the relegation zone come May.

Therefore, Wolves’ relegation odds provide value, especially now that Lopetegui has gone.

Scott Thornton’s Premier League Relegation Odds and Predictions: Blades feeling a little blunt

Luton are the favourites to be relegated, as you’d expect. The winners of the playoffs are the team that fared worst in the Championship, but Luton will be boosted by the fact that none of the last four playoff winners have gone on to finish in the bottom three in their first season in the Premier League. Luton have a capable squad and should be difficult to beat, particularly at home. However, this is a fiercely competitive league, and I expect them to fall just short.

Sheffield United also look set to struggle. They have just lost Iliman Ndiaye to Marseille, and his goals will be challenging to replace this season. For this reason, they are my favourites for the drop.

Bournemouth are the third favourites to go down. They stayed up under Gary O’Neil last season but have opted to go for a new manager this campaign. Andoni Iraola has been brought in from Rayo Vallecano, a side that secured a mid-table finishing in La Liga last season.

The Cherries have also been busy in the transfer market, so I expect them to stay clear of relegation in the upcoming season.

Tom Winch’s Premier League Relegation Odds and Predictions: Toffees in a sticky position

Luton (1.36) – As much as I’d like Luton to survive, it’s difficult to see how they do it. Although they’ve strengthened over the summer, I still think they need several new signings.

They’ll make Kenilworth Road a tricky place to go; the fans will be right on top in the smallest stadium in the division.

Carlton Morris scored 20 goals last term and recorded a further seven assists. He’ll need to have another cracking season to give his side a chance of surviving.

They’re priced at 1.33 to go down; it’s short but probably fair. They will thrive on going into most fixtures as underdogs, but ultimately, they’re a Championship side playing in the Premier League.

Sheffield United (1.61) – Sheffield United are second favourites to go down; the loss of Iliman Ndiaye is a considerable blow after his 24-goal contribution last time out.

A number of players amongst the squad have played in the top flight in recent history, that’ll give them somewhat of an advantage over fellow newcomers, Luton. They won’t make it easy for opponents, but the quality should prevail throughout the campaign.

Bennie Traore is the standout addition of the summer from the Blades; the Ivorian centre-forward had a sublime start to the season in Sweden with Hacken; he bagged 12 times in 14 matches. Paul Heckingbottom will hope that his new signing can carry on his goalscoring form from the opening match day.

Everton (4.00) – Everton escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth last season. A 5-1 win away at Brighton was the shock result of the season on match day 35, which ultimately kept them up.

An injury for Dominic Calvert-Lewin is always a possibility; keeping him fit will be important for Sean Dyche. The forward has played 17 matches in the previous two campaigns, scoring on seven occasions.

Finding the back of the net was the challenge last season for the Toffees; only the Wolves scored fewer. Arnaut Danjuma is a strong addition; he has the quality and most certainly strengthens the attack, but he played very little football in 2023.

Keeping Amadou Onana at the club will be necessary, though he is linked with a move away this summer. It’s an uninspiring side looking at it from an overall perspective.

This could be the season that finally catches up with Everton; they’ve narrowly avoided the drop for consecutive seasons. They’re 6th favourites to go down, meaning the 4.00 price stands out.
