As the Euro 2024 group stage comes to an end our European football expert, Daniele Fisichella, has analysed the decisive match in Group F, so here’s his Czech Republic vs Turkey prediction, team news, lineups and Euro 2024 preview.
With both teams in a precarious position, this clash in Hamburg promises to be a nail-biting affair.
Euro 2024, Wednesday, June 26th, 20:00 (UK)
Czech Republic’s journey in this tournament has been fraught with challenges. In their opening match, an own goal in stoppage time gifted Portugal a 2-1 victory. Their second match against Georgia ended in a 1-1 draw, with Patrik Schick equalising after Georges Mikautadze had given Georgia a shock lead via a penalty. The Czechs saw a first-half goal disallowed for handball and later conceded the penalty just before the break.
Despite dominating possession and creating 26 attempts on goal (for an xG of 3.65) against Georgia, the Czechs failed to find a crucial second goal as Georgia’s goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, produced nine saves.
Coach Ivan Hasek expressed frustration at his team’s misfortunes but remained hopeful that their luck would change in the final group match against Turkey.
Turkey’s tournament has been a mixed bag. They began with a 3-1 victory over Georgia but were handed a comprehensive 3-0 defeat by Portugal in their second match. Despite a promising start, Turkey’s defence has shown vulnerabilities, and they will need to tighten up if they hope to progress to the knockout stages.
Portugal’s clinical performance against Turkey saw goals from Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes, with an own goal adding to Vincenzo Montella’s side’s woes.
Despite the defeat, Turkey are still in contention for the knockout stages, needing at least a point against the Czech Republic to advance.
Both teams have showcased flashes of brilliance amidst their defensive vulnerabilities, setting the stage for a crucial showdown where victory is imperative.
Czech Republic, having garnered just one point from their first two matches, faces a do-or-die scenario to keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages alive.
A win against Turkey is non-negotiable if they aim to progress. Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities in their encounter against Georgia, their efforts were stymied by the exceptional performance of goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The potential absence of key striker Patrik Schick looms large, but coach Ivan Hasek remains confident in his squad’s ability to deliver under pressure.
On the other hand, Turkey seeks to bounce back from a resounding defeat at the hands of Portugal. While capable of scoring goals, they recognize the need for a more disciplined defensive approach to secure a positive result in their upcoming fixture. A win over Czech Republic would guarantee their qualification, although a draw could suffice depending on outcomes in other groups.
Given the defensive vulnerabilities displayed by both sides – Czech Republic conceding three goals in two matches, and Turkey four – it appears probable that both teams will register goals in their final group stage match.
Hakan Calhanoglu is widely acclaimed for his expertise in dead-ball situations. His proficiency in converting free-kicks and delivering precise corners poses a constant threat. Against a Czech defence that has exhibited susceptibility, Calhanoglu’s set-piece proficiency could prove pivotal.
Supported by talented teammates such as Orkun Kokcu and Arda Guler, Inter Milan’s midfielder benefits from a strong partnership. This dynamic trio has the capability to create numerous goal-scoring opportunities, enabling Calhanoglu to exploit any defensive lapses from the Czech side.
Additionally, the Turkish midfielder has enjoyed a productive season with Inter, netting 13 goals. His impressive record from penalty kicks, boasting 16 consecutive conversions in Serie A, further underscores his scoring credentials.
In contrast to their underwhelming performances at previous European Championships, Turkey’s current squad appears revitalised and poised to make a competitive impact in Germany. Qualification for the Round of 16 seems within reach for this vibrant team, buoyed by their strengthened form and cohesive gameplay.

A significant concern for Hasek is the fitness of forward Patrik Schick, who had to leave the field shortly after scoring against Georgia. Schick, who was a joint top scorer at the last Euros, is vital to the Czech attack. Adding to the team’s woes, midfielder Antonin Barak only managed 15 minutes of play due to a fever the night before the Georgia match.
Turkey’s Merih Demiral is set to step in for the suspended Abdulkerim Bardakci at the heart of the defence. Real Madrid winger Arda Guler is also eyeing a recall, with changes expected following their defeat to Portugal.
Czech Republic possible starting lineup:
Staněk; Holeš, Hranáč, Krejčí; Coufal, Souček, Barák, Provod, Douděra; Hložek, Lingr.
Turkey possible starting lineup:
Günok; Müldür, Demiral, Ayhan, Kadıoğlu; Yüksek, Çalhanoğlu; Aktürkoğlu, Güler, Yıldız; Yılmaz.
