Our expert Scott Thornton has Everton vs Manchester City predictions as the champions head to Goodison Park on Wednesday in an attempt to get their Premier League season back on track. A run of poor results and their trip to the Club World Cup has seen them drop out of the Premier League’s top four.
Man City face an Everton side that have proven to be a handful in recent months but Pep Guardiola’s side have a fantastic record against the Toffees.

England, Premier League, Wednesday 27th December, 20:15 (UK)
Manchester City have set the bar high since Pep Guardiola came in and the start of this season hasn’t gone according to plan. They have lifted the Super Cup and Club World Cup as the trophy-laden era at the club continues, but their domestic performances have left a lot to be desired.
Guardiola’s men face an uphill battle if they want to retain the Premier League this season. They have fallen behind in the league, but the recent triumph in Saudi Arabia will provide a much-needed boost.
Despite their difficulties, I’m backing Manchester City to get their Premier League campaign back on track as my main bet. We can back City to score over 1 goal in the match and win at odds of 1.90 with bet365.
City are averaging two goals per away game this season and while results haven’t been exceptional in recent weeks, they have proven they can respond to adversity throughout Guardiola’s tenure.
Everton have a woeful record against City. They have lost 11 of their last 13 matches against the Premier League juggernauts. Over that period they are conceding an average of 2.46 goals per game. City have scored two or more goals against Everton in eight of the last ten head-to-heads.
We are backing Manchester City to come out on top in our longshot bet, but Everton should give it a good go.
Sean Dyche will be delighted with how his team have performed so far this season, but the points deduction means they are still set for a battle against the drop. The Toffees are creating plenty of chances and they have found their scoring touch of late.
Everton have failed to score in just one of their last eight competitive matches. Over that period they are scoring 1.75 goals per game and they have the quality to hurt City.
Pep Guardiola’s side are experts at restricting the opposition to very few chances but they have still been conceding a reasonable amount on the road. They have managed just one clean sheet in an away league match since beating Burnley in their opening fixture; that can at Old Trafford. As a result, I’m backing both teams to find the bet here.
The final leg of our bet builder is Julian Alvarez to score at any time. He has become more important in Erling Haaland’s absence and is unlikely to lose his place here. The World Cup winner scored twice in City’s win over Fluminense in the Club World Cup final and will be keen to make the most of his opportunities in the side.
Alvarez has a sterling reputation, but his chances have been limited with Haaland taking on the goal-scoring responsibilities at the club. He may be playing second fiddle, but Alvarez is still managing 0.5 goals played per 90 minutes this season, and he will relish being the lone striker here.
Ashley Young and Abdoulaye Doucoure are doubts for Everton, and both will be sorely missed. They have been vital for Sean Dyche this season, and Doucoure possesses the physicality to cause problems for City’s midfield. They could yet feature if they pass a late fitness test. Idrissa Gueye is definitely absent, and he will also be a huge miss.
Kevin De Bruyne is unlikely to return to action here as he continues to work his way to full fitness after being sidelined. Haaland is also a major doubt, so City will have to do without their talismanic striker once again. Rodri picked up a knock in the win over Fluminense, and he may not be risked here.
