It’s an Italian football feast here at bettingexpert this week with previews focusing on Cagliari vs Torino, Atalanta vs Udinese, and, in addition, our Italian football expert, Daniele Fisichella, has also prepared Lazio vs Napoli prediction, tips, and best bets to get stuck into.
This is one of the biggest games of matchday 22 in Serie A as last season’s champions, Napoli, trail Lazio by only two points. Who’ll shake off the SuperCoppa disappointment with a win on Sunday?
In this article:
Italy, Serie A, Sunday, January 28th, 17:00 (UK)
Lazio was deemed as one of Italy’s most in-form teams but were humbled by Inter in the SuperCoppa semi-final last Thursday. The Biancocelesti were coming on the back of five consecutive wins that propelled them just one point behind Fiorentina, who’s currently in fourth place.
But in Riyadh, Lazio looked unable to stop Simone Inzaghi’s team’s large spells of possession, conceded a lot of chances and ended the match with zero shots on target.
Lazio and their manager, Maurizio Sarri, looked almost as if they did not want to be in Saudi Arabia and would rather continue to focus on the league.
Napoli got beaten in the final but showed a much stronger resilience and tactical know-how to stop Fiorentina first and then Inter.
Playing with ten men from the start of the second half, due to Giovanni Simeone’s sending-off, the Partenopei almost managed to drag the final to penalties but were punished by a Lautaro Martinez strike in stoppage time.
Despite the disappointing result, which virtually ended last year’s champions’ hopes to win a trophy this season, the good news is that playing with a back three and two dynamic wing-backs who don’t mind doing the hard work has helped Napoli to rediscover their team spirit.
Perhaps, given the absences of Victor Osimhen and Frank Zambo-Anguissa, there’s currently no other way for Napoli to be competitive.
Walter Mazzarri knows his players have not been capable of playing with the same fluidity they showed last season, and the defence needs more protection.
Napoli have already suffered seven defeats in Serie A this season, three more than what they collected in 2022/2023, and have only kept two clean sheets in the last eight games.
Until their Nigerian top scorer is back, it’s unlikely they’ll be scoring many goals and will continue to focus on playing on the counter.
Lazio, on the other hand, are far away from the level they reached last season and, for a couple of months, they’ve been playing with a slightly less high defensive line and, sometimes, are happy to leave the ball possession to the opposition.
Despite Lazio’s struggles in front of goals (they’re only Serie A’s tenth-best attack), they’ve become extremely capable of managing tight margins and hanging on after they’ve taken the lead.
In fact, five of the last six Lazio’s wins have been by just one goal (four matches have ended 1-0) as Sarri’s men have also kept six clean sheets in the last 12 games.
They won the last two games against Napoli, but considering they’ll be without two key players up front (Immobile and Zaccagni), will they be able to break down Napoli, who’ll have a much more defensive mindset than when they lost to the Lazio under Spalletti and Rudi Garcia?
Only seven out of 20 Lazio games in Serie A have ended with more than two goals scored, and Napoli’s last two away games against top sides in Italy (Juventus and Roma) have both ended 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.
Without the peace of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the presence of Simeone in the opposition box (both are suspended), Napoli looks less threatening.
Goals might come from setpieces, although both sides are in the bottom half for goals scored from corners and free-kicks (Lazio two, Napoli three).
Lazio vs Napoli Prediction odds via bet365 as at 11:15, January 23rd, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Lazio will be without Ciro Immobile and Mattia Zaccagni, both suspended, and Taty Castellanos might also miss the game due to a muscular injury.
Felipe Anderson will play as ‘False 9’, with Isaksen and Pedro on the flanks. In midfield, Luis Alberto will be supported by Rovella and Guendouzi. Patric will return as a centre-back after missing the games against Inter.
Napoli are depleted up front as Victor Osimhem (AFCON), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Giovanni Simeone (both suspended) will miss this match. But Walter Mazzarri also has problems in midfield where Cajuste (suspended) and Zambo-Anguissa (AFCON) are not available. Wing-back Pasquale Mazzocchi is a doubt, whereas goalkeeper Meret and defenders Natan and Oliveira have been ruled out.
