Paris Saint Germain’s early dominance in Ligue 1 is sandwiched by Ipswich corners in another League One, and further misery for Hartlepool – three sides that will likely never share the same sentence again.
In this article:
England, League One, Saturday, August 27th, 15:00 (UK)
In Ipswich’s two home fixtures this season, the Tractor Boys registered eight corners vs Bolton and ten vs MK Dons, whilst the match totals came to 14 and 13, respectively. In all five outings so far, those of an Ipswich persuasion saw their side record at least eight corners, while the match corners total has surpassed ten in 4/5 – the most recent Shrewsbury fixture ending on ten exactly.
Barnsley’s five League One matches to date have seen them engineer plenty of corners: 7, 6, 5, 8 and 6 corners stand as the totals from the Yorkshire outfit, suggesting that Ipswich won’t need to do all of the heavy lifting next weekend.
Over a larger dataset, from 23 home matches at Portman Road, Ipswich managed 5.43 corners forced per90 in 2021/22. Those in the away dressing room averaged 4.30 corners against Ipswich in the same timeframe, threatening that 10+ Asian line available on bet365. For those unfamiliar with the proposed selection, stakes will be returned in full if the match ends on ten flags.
Although Barnsley met their fate in the Championship last term, finishing in last place with a whimper, they certainly weren’t the worst corner team in the division. The Tykes hit the twelfth-highest corner average in the league, with 4.39 for and 5.96 against. In short, if these corner trends continue, the evens price available at the start of the week will look like a steal as the week comes to a close.
France, Ligue 1, Sunday, August 28th, 19:45 (UK)
Paris Saint Germain have raced out of the blocks at a startling pace in Ligue 1. With Mauricio Pochettino out of the door, 17 goals in PSG-blue imply that Christophe Galtier’s Parisians plan to flat-track bully their way to another Ligue 1 title.
Scores of 0-5, 5-2, and 1-7 against Clermont, Montpellier and Lille highlight the approach of PSG’s opening foray into 2022/23. There’s no let up – even at 4-0, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and company are searching, hunting for another.
In the first half of each game, PSG claimed first-half wins quite comfortably: 0-3, 2-0, and 0-4, the scores on the doors at the end of 45 minutes before the Qatari-backed superclub found the net at least once more in the second half.
So, PSG should hold their end of the bargain for the proposed selection, but what about AS Monaco? Well, it has been an uninspiring start to life for the Monégasques. A win away at RC Strasbourg was followed swiftly by a 1-1 draw with Stade Rennais – not the worst result in the world considering the 15th-minute Youssouf Fofana red card. Another red came the weekend after, thanks to right-back, Vanderson. The strawberry was brandished in the 72nd minute, but not before RC Lens had scored three by the hour mark, two of which came before the break.
Monaco have been unfortunate in the three opening fixtures. Yet, despite losing Aurélien Tchouameni in midfield, their squad has a more well-rounded feel to it this campaign – one that should cause PSG problems on its day. The acquisitions of Takumi Minamino, Mohamed Camara to fill Tchouameni’s shoes, Breel Embolo, and Malang Sarr are impressive. However, given PSG’s start, don’t be surprised to see the hosts take an early lead in the capital and assert their dominance from there.
England, League Two, Saturday, August 27th, 15:00 (UK)
Richie Wellens, the Orient gaffer, summed up the kind of attitude in camp with his post-match comments at the weekend. Wellens vented after a 3-1 victory that instilled them as league leaders after five games.
“We’re getting it in patches. We’ve scored three today and could’ve scored quite a few more; we could’ve scored six or seven. But I’m a little bit disappointed in the way that we played at times.”
Orient found themselves 0-3 up away from home going into injury before a 96th-minute consolation goal from Colchester forward Noah Chilvers took the gloss of a convincing win.
The form team in the division faces a Hartlepool side next Saturday who occupy third from bottom without a win, having scored two goals in five matches. The two points Pool were able to muster came in the shape of 0-0 draws, hardly glowing recommendations of how they’ll pick up points this season. Aside from Hartlepool’s two bore draws, three losses in the league plus a comfortable 4-0 loss to Championship outfit, Blackburn Rovers, have painted a bleak picture.
Including the cup defeat, Saturday’s visitors have lost all three away fixtures in 2022/23 to an aggregate score of 10-1. On the other hand, Orient has operated impressively, casting aside Mansfield and Grimsby to nil on home soil.
At 1.80 on Quinnbet, or the wider-known Betway (1.77), Ladbrokes/Coral (1.75), or bet365 (1.72) it’s a price that should see a lot of action come kick off next weekend.
