Both of these sides had days to forget over the weekend. Both FC Koln and Freiburg lost their Bundesliga matches to teams at either end of the table. Koln ran out 5-1 losers to a rampant Borussia Dortmund but Freiburg’s loss might sting a bit more. They handed Paderborn just a second away win of the season and both will want to get back to winning ways in this one.
The recent form is certainly in FC Koln’s favour. They were on a run of excellent form with four consecutive Bundesliga wins before Dortmund put a stop to that on Friday night. For Freiburg, things have been a little more unpredictable with a fairly even split of wins, losses, and draws in the last few months.
Freiburg are seeking revenge for the last match between these two. FC Koln were the party poopers when they scored in injury time to secure a 2-1 victory at Schwarzwald-Stadion back in August. Going back a little further, Freiburg has the edge with five wins in the last seven meetings.
The head-to-head record between these two sides is very interesting. Home advantage has a big impact in this particular fixture as nine of the last 12 matches between these two have ended in a home win. It wouldn’t be out of the question for that record to become 10 in 13 this weekend.
FC Koln’s safety is built on their home record as they have picked up four wins and a draw in their last six matches at RheinEnergieStadion. They haven’t lost a Bundesliga match at home since Markus Gisdol was appointed back in November. This is down to a solid defence that has conceded just twice in those four matches. It’s an impressive run of form and if they do stay up this season, it will be on the back of their home form.
Freiburg’s away record will not give them confidence heading into this match. They’ve won just one of their last seven Bundesliga fixtures away from home and it’s easy to see why. They just struggle to keep their opponents out. Freiburg have kept just one clean sheet away from this season in the Bundesliga and that was way bag in August against Hoffenheim. Still, this Freiburg side is anything but predictable. It wouldn’t be out of the question for them to pull off a surprise result here just like they did back in October with a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig.
All clues point to a tight and tense affair here. FC Koln’s impressive home form makes them the favourites at 7/5 but Freiburg aren’t that far behind. An away win is 11/4 and you’ll get the same odds for a draw. With both sides shipping goals, it’s no surprise to see both teams to score so low at 8/15.
Unfortunately, we may not be in for a classic contest. Neither of these sides are known for their goal scoring and only two teams have scored fewer goals than FC Koln this season. They’ve scored 23 and Freiburg aren’t that far ahead with 29. Three of Koln’s last four home Bundesliga matches have had fewer than 2.5 goals. You’ll get tempting offs of 6/5 for there to be under 2.5 goals in this one.
But those odds may be generous for a reason. As poor as Freiburg’s away record is in the league, they haven’t struggled scoring goals on the road. They’ve only failed to score in one of their last six matches away from home in the league so their main problem has been keeping them out. A 2-1 home win seems a decent punt at 8/1.
But there is some evidence to suggest that this will be a higher-scoring match than many believe. There has been an average of five goals in the last three fixtures between these two teams. Over 4.5 goals may, therefore, be a little generous at 3/1.
