It was always a possibility and now it has come to pass for England. Gareth Southgate and his England players knew that topping Group D would likely give them a tougher draw. It might have been the world champions France had things gone different in Group F but it’s still a difficult match.
England got here by topping Group D. They beat Croatia on matchday 1 before their title bid stalled against Scotland. The 0-0 draw took the wind out of their sails but some optimism returned after the showdown with the Czech Republic. The 1-0 win secured top spot and what usually means an easier draw. That was not the case this time around.
Germany booked their ticket to Wembley after picking up four points in Group F. They lost to France but recovered with that 4-2 win against Portugal. Joachim Loew’s side showed their best and worst traits during that 2-2 draw with Hungary on matchday 3.
Both sides will feel as if they need to improve ahead of this match. It’s the first time England and Germany have met in a competitive match since Loew’s side won 4-1 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. That set the footballing nations in different directions. Germany lifted their fourth World Cup trophy and England rang the changes in their national setup.
But similar problems now face both of these sides. England and Germany both see a great deal of possession. Only Spain had the ball for a higher percentage of their group stage matches than Germany. England held it for 53.9% of their group games and boasted solid passing stats.
Both sides lack creativity. Germany were a little better in that respect, creating 13.3 chances per match in a tricky Group F. England have so far only mustered 7.3 shots per match at Euro 2021. That’s the lowest number of any side remaining in the competition. North Macedonia, Turkey, Scotland and Hungary have all had more shots on target than England in this competition.
That does not seem to affect the odds. England are still the favourites to qualify from this match at 1.80. Germany aren’t far behind at 1.95 to progress.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the sides are still level after 90 minutes. Draws are common in the knockout stage of international tournaments, as we recently found.
Raheem Sterling is usually a safe bet to score for England. Failing that, punters can switch this selection to Germany’s Kai Havertz and receive the same returns.
Just don’t be surprised if Germany win in the end. They’re hard to stop in knockout matches and have been for decades. Both sides have struggled at times in this tournament but Germany’s experience should win out.
