The English top flight makes its return after the FA Cup and we have Premier League best bets at the ready. We’ll look at five matches here, identifying value picks for some of the biggest fixtures across this matchday. We start with a couple of Saturday afternoon kickoffs before concluding with that crucial North London Derby on Sunday afternoon.

The goals flew in when these sides met in the reverse fixture back in October. Liverpool 3-3 Brighton was the first match in charge for Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi. He watched his side take a 2-0 lead at Anfield inside 20 minutes. Liverpool hit back before Leandro Trossard completed a remarkable hat-trick to snatch a point.
It was a promising start for the Italian boss on the South Coast but things have been a little rockier. The outcome are difficult to predict. Defeats to Brentford and Aston Villa came either side of wins over Chelsea and Wolves. The only predictable thing about this Brighton side has been goals. Both teams have scored in each of their last seven Premier League matches.
It’s a similar story for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds. Inconsistent form – wins over Manchester City and Tottenham sandwiching defeats to Nottingham Forest and Leeds – followed by a gluttony of goals.
The bookies are expecting goals but perhaps not enough. The Asian line is set at 3.0 but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that line smashed on Saturday. Our resident supercomputer BETSiE has the line as high as 3.52 for this one which equals value.
Each of Brighton’s last seven Premier League matches have had at least three goals and the same is true for Liverpool. If there are exactly three scored in this one, the bet is pushed.

It’s a relegation battle on Merseyside as Everton host Southampton. Here we have two leaky defences playing behind teams that don’t score enough goals. It’s a question of which can hold it together.
Frank Lampard is fighting for his job. Southampton have already played their new manager bounce card in the quest for Premier League survival. Nathan Jones’ arrival on the South Coast hasn’t done much in the league but a Carabao Cup win over Manchester City in midweek points to what could be. Should the Toffees lose to a side with a new manager here, the temptation to do the same may prove too much.
Both sides are conceding too many goals in the Premier League. Southampton have only kept one clean sheet in their 18 Premier League matches thus far. The Toffees are going through a similar spell after leaking goals in each of their last four. That run includes three against Bournemouth and four to Brighton two weeks back.
It’s a difficult match to score in terms of the scoreline so I’m avoiding a winner. However, considering the defensive frailty and the need to win for both sides, BTTS is the pick.

It’s a local derby with plenty to play for as Nottingham Forest host Leicester. A lot has changed at the City Ground since they last faced the Foxes. Forest lost 4-0 at the King Power back in October. 10 games, 13 points and one new contract for Steve Cooper later, things are looking up. They’ve faced Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea in their last seven matches and only lost two of them.
That 4-0 win back in October brought about an upturn in Leicester. It lasted until Christmas and the Foxes have since lost their last three in the Premier League. A 1-0 defeat to Fulham at home on January 3rd was particularly troubling.
If their midweek League Cup match with Wolves is anything to go by, expect a fired-up Nottingham Forest. Seven yellow cards – including one for the Wolves boss – in a tie that Cooper’s side ultimately won. It could be a crucial one for midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White who has found some form along with his side.
Forest have impressed at home of late. They haven’t lost in five Premier League matches at the City Ground. The +0 Asian handicap is essentially a draw no bet. If the sides draw, the stakes are returned.

Wolves are flying under the radar right now. Julen Lopetegui’s arrival has ushered in a much richer vein of form. A crucial win over Everton on Boxing Day, a narrow defeat to Manchester United and a draw with Villa equals their Premier League points tally for the nine matches before then.
West Ham have taken one point from their last six Premier League matches. They’ve only won once on the road all season and failed to score in four of their nine away games. The Hammers have kept one clean sheet on the road all season which will be a problem against a Wolves side that has typically thrived in low-scoring matches.
The odds haven’t quite caught up with Wolves. They’re a side on the up and I expect them to continue picking up points starting here. New signings in January will give them a boost and should make Premier League survival a formality. The Hammers don’t travel well so the home win is the pick.

It’s a North London Derby of real importance as 5th host 1st in the Premier League. These matches have typically been won by the home side in recent years. The last league game between these two won by the away side was back in 2014. That was the last time that Arsenal did the league double over their North London rivals but it could be on the cards here after that 3-1 win at the Emirates in October.
Arsenal’s form this season has been remarkable. Just seven dropped points all season long and two of those came at home to Newcastle a few weeks back. The injury to Gabriel Jesus hasn’t brought about a downturn in form but there is huge pressure on Eddie Nketiah to step up here.
Especially after what happened last season. The Gunners travelled to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in May 2022 for what was essentially a playoff match for 4th place. Spurs won 3-0 but it could have been so much worse for Mikel Arteta’s men.
But things feel different with this Arsenal team. It’s a stronger side – Rob Holding, Cedric Soares and Mohamed Elneny started that day – and one that has passed a series of difficult tests. The 3-2 win over Liverpool and 1-0 victory at Chelsea earlier this season are evidence of a side that is more composed in big matches than ever before. The away win is due in a North London Derby and it should come here.
One trend I don’t expect to change is the number of goals scored. The North London contest is one of the most entertaining derby matches for neutrals. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in six of the last seven Premier League meetings. I don’t think that will change here which boosts those odds well up.
