An own goal would give Spain the lead early, in the 8th minute. Spain would hold the 1-0 advantage until the 68th minute when Switzerland would level the score 1-1. A red card in the 77th minute would not discourage the Swiss who would maintain the 1-1 score through to the end of both regulation and extra time.

Switzerland would take the advantage early in the penalty shootout before Spain would steady and do enough to see their way through to a semi final meeting at Wembley on July 6 with Italy.
