Lamar Jackson has been trending towards favourite status for a while, but a masterpiece to topple the 49ers’ winning streak was enough to see him become a favourite. For many, this was the game Jackson sewed up the award.
The Dolphins and Steelers games might not be necessary for Jackson to top the voting. Staying healthy and putting up some more numbers will certainly help solidify his case after Brock Purdy, Dak Prescott and Jalen Hurts have fallen from consideration.
Brock Purdy’s four interceptions in the loss to the Ravens ended his MVP case. Finally, Christian McCaffrey is listed among the favourites for the award after scoring another touchdown at the weekend.
McCaffrey has had a lot of MVP buzz all season long, but that has not translated to a considerable shortening of his price. Clearly the most impactful player on the best team, the former Panther deserves consideration, even if the long-running tradition of a quarterback winning the honour is maintained.
Leading the league in passing yards and second in completion percentage, Tua Tagovailoa has been excellent for the Dolphins all year. While outduelling Dak Prescott has enhanced his MVP case, he needs to deliver a pair of spectacular performances in Weeks 17 and 18 if he is to pip Jackson to the hardware.
With the offensive weapons at his disposal, it’s certainly possible. Tagovailoa is not the heartbeat of his team’s offence like Jackson is, but Miami could yet finish with a better record than Baltimore which would certainly make for some difficult voting decisions.
