Update: League 1 Promotion Odds 3rd September 2021

With League 1 already well underway, the table is taking shape, and it’s time to go back and have a look at the promotion odds market. Some have hit the ground running, whilst some have struggled at the start of the season, damaging their chances of making it to the Championship.

After three years in League 1, Sunderland finally look ready to make a comeback. With four wins and one loss in their first five matches, Sunderland have placed themselves atop the League 1 standings. Their odds to be promoted shortened from 4.00 to 2.10 (Mansionbet), and they are now the top favourites to be promoted.

In second place are Sheffield Wednesday. With three victories, one draw and one defeat to start the season, Sheffield are in contention for the top of the table. Their odds to be promoted shortened from 4.00 to 3.00 (Skybet), and they are very much in the race to make a comeback to the Championship.

After spending four years in league 2, and four more in League 1, Portsmouth are looking to grab another promotion. They have three wins, one draw, and one defeat in their first five matches, and they are currently the third favourites to be promoted. Their promotion odds recently shortened from 5.00 to 3.75 (Skybet).

Rotherham recently appeared as one of the favourites to be promoted this season. They won three and lost two of their matches to start the season. They have bounced back and forth from league 1 to the Championship in the last four years, and their promotion odds have shortened from 5.50 to 3.75 (Bet365).

By far the biggest disappointment so far have been Ipswich. The team entered the season as favourites to be promoted at 3.50 odds, and are now available at 4.50, dropping down to fifth place (Skybet). Ipswich have three draws and two defeats to start the season, and they are nowhere near their expectations. They were relegated from the Championship in 2018/19 and are still looking to bounce back.

Another team off to a solid start are Wigan Athletic. With three wins, one draw and one defeat, Wigan are still sixth in line to grab a promotion this year. Just Like Rotherham, Wigan have gone back and forth through the leagues in recent seasons and they are looking for some consistency. Their promotion odds remain at 5.00 (Paddy Power).

League 1 Promotion Odds as at 3rd September 2021. Odds may now differ

All odds mentioned below are best odds available as at 3rd September 2021. League 1 promotion odds may now differ.

The Favourites

Three sides have pulled away from the rest and are the favourites in the League 1 promotion odds. These three sides are also the frontrunners in the League 1 winner odds which shouldn’t be a surprise.

Ipswich Town are first of these three sides. The Tractor Boys finished 9th in League 1 last campaign, five points off the playoffs. They’ve already spent big on midfielder Rekeem Harper from West Bromwich Albion and will hope to push for promotion. Ipswich were Championship staples until their 2019 relegation. They are the 3.50 favourites in the League 1 promotion odds. That makes them the League 1 odds winner.

Just behind them are Sunderland at 4.00 in the League 1 promotion odds. The Black Cats tumbled down the leagues several years ago but are short-priced to qualify for England’s second-tier this campaign. Sunderland are eager to get back to the Championship after a disastrous couple of seasons.

The Black Cats enjoyed an encouraging season last campaign. They finished 4th overall, 10 points behind 2nd-placed Peterborough in the automatic promotion spots. They lost out in the playoffs but the bookmakers don’t think that will hurt them. Sunderland are the favourites in the League 1 winner odds which sets them up well for promotion.

When it comes to League 1 odds, winner of the division is surely the most important. The Black Cats are joint-top of that list with Ipswich. Both sides are available at 8.00.

Sheffield Wednesday complete the three top sides in the odds on League 1 promotion. Wednesday dropped down from the Championship last season as they finished bottom of England’s second-tier. They aren’t far from the League 1 odds winner. The bookies expect a strong showing from them.

Sheffield Wednesday are the third-favourites to secure a place in the Championship. Their odds on League 1 promotion are 4.00 with most bookies. They’re out at 11.00 in the League 1 winner odds as well. The bookmakers expect them to be towards the top of the table.

The Challengers

Ipswich, Sunderland and Sheffield United have the lowest League 1 outright odds but there are plenty of other sides in the division. League 1 will be competitive this season and the bookies’ prices reflect that. The League 1 promotion odds have a further nine sides priced at 8.00 or under.

Charlton should push the top three sides all the way. They missed out on a playoff place on goal difference last season. Their League 1 odds of promotion are 5.00.

They aren’t the only former Premier League side with League 1 promotion odds of 5.00. Both Portsmouth and Wigan are available at that price. They’ve got the same League 1 winner odds of 13.00. Pompey finished 13 places higher than Wigan last season but both sides should be towards the top of the table in 2022.

A couple of sides are available at 5.50. Rotherham and Lincoln City are the same price with the bookies. The Millers were one of three sides relegated from the Championship last campaign. Lincoln lost the League 1 playoff final to Blackpool and the bookies expect them to be towards the top again this year. They’ve had something of a League 1 odds promotion compared to last season.

Oxford United filled the fourth and final playoff spot last campaign. They had one of the best attacks in the division and the bookies expect them to do well again this season. They’re amongst the favourites for promotion at 6.00 and their League 1 winner odds are 17.00.

Bolton are also amongst the challengers. The Trotters bounced back last season after consecutive relegations saw them plunge from the Championship to League 2. Their odds on League 1 promotion are 6.50.

MK Dons and Wycombe complete the list of challengers. The Dons finished in mid-table last campaign and are 7.00 in the League 1 promotion odds. Wycombe were the third side relegated from the Championship and are 8.00 to bounce straight back up there.

The Outside Chances

It’s hard to discount the majority of sides in the division. In the League 1 odds, promotion is a possibility for many of these clubs. The bookies price the outside chances between 11.00 and 21.00

Doncaster and Burton lead the race of these clubs. The bookies give them an outside chance of challenging for a place in the Championship next season. The Brewers finished seven points behind Doncaster in the table last season but the bookies rank them similarly here.

The bookies split the rest of the teams into a couple of tiers. Crewe and Plymouth are available at 15.00 while Shrewsbury and Accrington are at 17.00. The bookies expect all four sides to be closer to the bottom than the top. Each of them have lower League 1 relegation odds than promotion.

The same is true of AFC Wimbledon. They finished two places and four points above the relegation zone last season. AFC Wimbledon are 21.00 in their odds on League 1 promotion.

The Longshots

The odds are short for most sides to go up but not all of them. The bookies expect these three sides to be closer to the bottom three than the top three. Cheltenham, Cambridge and Morecambe were three of the four sides to come up from League 2 last season. The bookies make them the longshots to go up.

Cheltenham have the shortest odds of the three. The Robins are 29.00 to go straight up to the Championship with consecutive promotions. When it comes to League 1 odds, promotion is not their shortest price. Their League 1 relegation odds are only 2.75 so the bookies expect them to be towards the bottom.

Cambridge and Morecambe complete the 24 teams in the division. When it comes to League 1 odds, promotion is at the back of their minds. Cambridge are 34.00 while the Shrimps are out at 41.00 to go up. Those are the longest odds in the division.

The bookies expect these sides to be towards the bottom. The two sides’ League 1 relegation odds are much lower than their chances of heading up a division. Cambridge are 2.50 to go straight back down to League 2 and Morecambe are the overall favourites for the drop at 2.20. To put that into perspective, Morecambe’s League 1 title odds are out at 201.00.
