Which sides are the favourites in the League 2 promotion odds? This is the fourth-tier of the English football league but it is competitive. Four sides will head up to League 1 which makes for a wide betting market.

In this article:

League 2 promotion odds represent the chance a given side has of winning promotion from League 2 in this current season.

Four sides will earn promotion from England’s fourth tier to League 1. The 24 sides that make up the division fiercely contest those four places. The clubs that finish in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are all given automatic promotion places.

When looking at League 2 odds, promotion is short for many sides. That is because four sides head for League 1 each season. The clubs that finish between 4th and 7th in the table compete in the League 2 playoffs.

A chosen club can take any one of those four and the bet will still count. It won’t be worth more if the side wins the title. Look to League 2 winner odds for that market.

There are some important things to consider. League 2 promotion odds are only valid for this upcoming season. It’s a single-season that is available throughout the campaign. When it comes to League 2 odds, promotion isn’t just important before a ball is kicked. The odds will fluctuate throughout as teams go through good and bad form.

All odds mentioned below are best odds available as at 2nd August 2021. League 1 promotion odds may now differ.

The Favourites

Salford City are the favourites in the League 2 champions odds. They finished 8th last season despite ranking as one of the favourites in the League 2 betting odds. They were two points off the playoffs and eight away from the automatic places.

They’ve climbed through the football leagues in recent seasons. It’s four promotions in seven seasons for Salford City. They’ll hope for another one here and are the favourites in the League 2 promotion odds. Their League 2 winner odds are 7.00 and they are 2.75 to go up.

Bristol Rovers are their biggest challengers. The Pirates are the second-favourites in the markets to go up and to lift the title. Their League 2 winner odds are 12.00, some way behind the big favourites, Salford. The Pirates finished bottom of League 1 last season but are amongst the frontrunners to head straight back up.

Rovers manager Joey Barton was appointed in February but won only three of his 18 league matches in charge. They are the favourites of the four sides relegated from League 1 last season to go straight back up. Bristol Rovers’ odds on League 2 promotion are 3.75.

Mansfield and Bradford are the other two favourites. Both sides finished in mid-table last season but are amongst the favourites to climb up a tier this season.

A lot of that may be down to their new managers. Nigel Clough took over at Field Mill in November 2020 and oversaw an upturn in form. Mansfield’s odds on League 2 promotion are 4.00 which is impressive for a side that finished last season in 16th. Mansfield are 13.00 in their League 2 winner odds. That makes them the third-favourites.

Derek Adams took the reins at Valley Parade over the summer. Promotion is nothing new to Adams after he guided Morecambe up last season via the playoffs. He chose not to stay with the Shrimps and to instead stay in the fourth tier with Bradford. The bookies expect them to do well. Their League 2 winner odds are amongst the lowest in the league at 15.00. The Bantams are also at 4.00 in the League 2 outright odds.

The Challengers

A host of clubs should challenge the top-four teams. Leyton Orient, Forest Green Rovers and Exeter lead a competitive chasing pack of 14 other clubs priced at 10.00 or under in the League 2 promotion odds.

The O’s finished 11th in League 2 last year but the bookies rate them highly. Orient manager Kenny Jackett has earned promotion before and they are 4.33 to go up in the League 2 outright odds.

Forest Green Rovers are level with them at 4.33 in the League 2 promotion odds. They could be the surprise package of the season. It’s unclear how Forest Green Rovers will go this campaign with rookie manager Rob Edwards at the helm. Edwards has experience with the England youth teams but is vying for promotion this season.

Exeter are available at the same price in the League 2 betting odds 21/22. They finished outside the playoff places last campaign. The Grecians were three points from the playoffs and nine away from automatic promotion. They were a point behind the favourites for next season, Salford. Exeter’s League 2 title odds are 15.00 which makes them the fourth-favourites.

Port Vale and Tranmere Rovers are available at the same price. Both sides are out at 4.50 in their odds on League 2 promotion. Port Vale finished in mid-table last season but Tranmere reached the playoffs. They lost their semi-final to the eventual winners, Morecambe.

Carlisle are available at 5.00, ahead of last season’s losing playoff finalists. Newport County are out at 5.50 in their League 2 promotion odds. They were 90 minutes away from getting there last season.

Three sides that were in League 1 last season are in the running to get back up there. Rochdale, Northampton and Swindon all came down from League 1. Looking at their League 2 odds, promotion is achievable this campaign. Northampton are at 5.00, Rochdale are 6.50 and Swindon are out at 8.00 to go up this season.

Walsall finished in 19th last year but the bookies expect them to improve. For their League 2 odds, promotion is shorter than relegation. The Saddlers are 6.50 to go up and 10.00 to go down.

Harrogate and Colchester complete the outside shots. Both sides are out at 8.50 to earn promotion to League 1 this season. The two sides were well away from the promotion spots last campaign and the bookies expect them to be closer to the bottom here. In their League 2 odds, promotion is about as likely as relegation.

The Outside Chances

It’s always hard to predict the lower leagues of English football. That’s why the rest of the sides in the division are considered outside chances. Many of these clubs have lower League 2 relegation odds than a chance of promotion. Oldham are 9.00 to go up in the League 2 outright odds this season. They are the shortest-priced of these outside chances.

Several other sides are priced at 13.00. Barrow, Crawley and Scunthorpe are at the same price. They are all shorter in the League 2 relegation odds which shows where the bookies expect them to be. Newly-promoted Hartlepool are also available at 13.00 to go up.

Rounding off the 24 sides are Stevenage and the other newly-promoted side, Sutton United. Both teams are out at 17.00 to go up this season, Sutton for the second successive campaign. They are the big favourites at 4.50 in the League 2 relegation odds. Stevenage are out at 7.00 to go down so the bookies aren’t quite sure where they’ll end up.
